Ancient Pre-Hispanic Grave Discovered Beneath Lima Street

Archaeologists in Lima, Peru have unearthed a 1,000-year-old pre-Hispanic burial site beneath a residential street during gas pipeline work.

  • Human remains wrapped in burial cloths, along with pottery, were discovered just two meters from a home’s entrance in the Puente Piedra district.
  • Experts believe the grave likely belongs to the Chancay culture (800–1200 years ago), known for its textiles and ceramics.
  • Another nearby burial  –  a mummified woman  –  was found last month, suggesting the area may be part of a larger ancient cemetery.

“We are probably over a pre-Hispanic cemetery,” said Jose Pablo Aliaga, archaeologist for gas firm Calidda, which has reported over 2,200 archaeological finds in Lima since 2004.Lima hosts more than 400 archaeological sites, while Peru is home to iconic ruins like Machu Picchu and the Nazca Lines  –  showcasing its rich and ancient heritage.
